Tip #3 : Know Your Demographics!
In my last 2 posts, I’ve explained the first 2 steps I think need to be taken, in order to start an effective, media ministry.
Those two are: Budget & Broadcast Market.
Remember this regarding your budget: It is always best to know how many discretionary funds you have available to use, in order to move forward. No matter how small or large you think that number is, it’s always best to know without a doubt, how much you can definitely count on to be available for your new multimedia outreach investment.
Regarding Broadcast Market, keep this in mind: When you first go on the air, the first broadcast market you air in, doesn’t necessarily HAVE to be the city in which you live, especially if you or the ministry has a strong following in another market that may be a bit more inexpensive to air your broadcast in.
Part of doing your research for broadcast TV purposes means determining what kind of audience you would like to reach as you take advantage of multimedia evangelism over the airwaves. In short, this is called determining your DEMOGRAPHICS.
Dictionary.com gives this definition:
Demographics: The characteristics of human populations and population segments, especially when used to identify consumer markets: The demographics of the Southwest indicate a growing population of older consumers.
Here’s how I would use this information, if I know that God would have me evangelize to senior saints. I would strategically pick out 5 cities within the Southwest (where I know Senior Saints tend to migrate) and determine which local TV stations in those particular markets best fit my budget.
Just as, if I know I’m called to the city of Omaha, Nebraska the 76th largest broadcast market in the country, to particularly reach marketplace professionals, then I would make sure that my broadcast airs at a time when I know marketplace professionals are most likely watching the TV or a specific channel.
So this means, I would probably try to air my broadcast early in the morning when I know they are getting dressed and NOT necessarily on Sunday afternoons, the “typical” times most ministries try to air their broadcast to reach the “churched” or those people we know already attend church regularly.
Again, remember determining your demographic audience is about determining who God has called you or the ministry to focus on at this particular point in your Vision.
Ask yourself these questions as you prepare to determine WHO your demographic audience is:
1. Who has God called me to minister to?
2. What do I know about when they are “watching TV”?
3. What channels do they watch?
Let’s do a more specific example:
If I’m called to minister to young people, depending on the age, there is a strong possibility that they are watching TV during the late afternoon hours right after school and possibly Saturday mornings.
Statistics also show that they tend to watch networks like WB (now CW) and other cable channels and not necessarily the standard affiliate stations that are seen in every metropolitan city. (ie: ABC, NBC, CBS)
Once you know who you are called to minister to via TV it becomes much easier to have a productive conversation with your broadcast agency representative as you begin to plan your media evangelism outreach.

Tip 2:How To Determine the BEST Market To Air In
Determine The Best Broadcast Market To Air In
Next, you’ll want to determine, what BROADCAST MARKET (City) you would like to have your broadcast air in. What broadcast market should you air in, is a question I don’t think pastors and evangelists really take enough time to evaluate and answer. Nevertheless it is top on my list of how to start a media ministry broadcast without bursting your budget. Many times I believe ministries take for granted that they have to START their broadcast in their local city. This is not true and a lot of times is not the most affordable option for small to medium sized ministries or even Evangelists located in major metropolitan television markets.
For instance, if your ministry is in Chicago, the 3rd largest market in the country behind New York and Los Angeles, and you have a congregation of 100 and a guaranteed monthly budget of $600.00 a month, it is DEFINITELY more feasible to air your broadcast in a near-by city of say South Bend, Indiana the 87th largest TV market in the country.
Or if you have that same size congregation in Nashville, Tennessee, the 30th largest TV market in the country your best bet may be to start your broadcast in Huntsville, Alabama the 84th largest market in the country, where you just might find an overnight slot between 1-4am for a couple hundred bucks per week on a local affiliate network ie: (ABC,NBC, CBS) as opposed to paying anywhere between $400-600.00 per week on a local Christian network that may reach less people.
Now don’t get me wrong, I am NOT saying don’t air on local Christian networks. But, what I am saying is DO YOUR RESEARCH before investing your ministry outreach dollars on ANY network. After all you may find with a little planning and budgeting, what you thought might cost more, may cost less in the right market.
I hope you have found this helpful. Check back again next week.

Tip #1: KNOW YOUR PRE-BUDGET
I. Know Your Pre-Budget
After you have prayerfully considered TV outreach as a viable mode of evangelism for you and your ministry and you know without a doubt God is impressing on you to move forward, it is now time to move to the first basic step PRE-BUDGET!
It is always best to know how many discretionary funds you have available to use, in order to move forward as you begin the due diligence process. No matter how small or large you think that number is, it’s always best to go into the situation knowing without a doubt, how much you can definitely count on to be available for this new multimedia outreach investment. By having a pre-budget amount in place, it will make it a lot easier to determine, how you will get from point A-Z on your broadcast journey.
For instance: One young pastor I’ve consulted with in Texas, knows that he wants to spread the gospel on TV. He found out that he can go on public access FREE. However, he knew he didn’t want to go on public access at the same quality of all the other programs. But he also thought he couldn’t afford to invest in everything he needed, in order to reach that next level of quality.
Amazingly enough, after doing some research, he found that the public access station actually “loans” industry standard video recording equipment to those who use the station’s airwaves. With that in mind, this young pastor knew that was one expense that was already “erased” giving him the ability to stretch his small pre-budget number longer and now capitalize on figuring out a way to use that pre-budget amount to find affordable options for a professional show open, close and graphics, without bursting his budget!
Tomorrow, February 8, 2008 we'll explore TIP #2: Determining the Best Broadcast Market To Air In

Spreading The Gospel On the TV Airwaves
Is part of your Vision to Spread the Gospel on the TV airwaves?
If so, I know it can seem to be an almost insurmountable challenge when you think about the cost of technology. But, that’s why I’m here to give you some valuable insider tips on How to Begin a Quality TV Broadcast without Bursting Your Budget.
This is a great time to tell you more about my PASSION. It all started in 1999 back in Nashville, when I was a reporter/anchor for the CBS affiliate, WTVF. My then videographer (Chris O’Neal) and I decided to start a production company geared towards the faith-based community.
Back then we would cringe in the newsroom, as we glanced at the television screen and saw a Pastor speaking with such great power, while his media representation was sub par. IT WAS EMBARRASING! So embarrassing that a righteous indignation rose up in me and I KNEW IMMEDIATELY that I had the ability, skills, knowledge and creativity to make a difference!
Just watching television sporadically while in the newsroom week after week, gave me the opportunity to see just how many Pastors really needed help with their media vision but apparently didn’t know where to begin. That’s when God gave me a vision and a strategy on how to assist churches across the world with the media ministry outreach.
How did you I get started?
One great man of God who knew I could make a difference as well, was my then spiritual mentor and Pastor, Bishop Joseph Warren Walker III, Pastor of Mt. Zion Nashville. He encouraged me to move forward with the vision and was our very first client.
First we did 3 commercials for the ministry when it was right at 10 thousand members and transitioning to worshipping at TSU’s Gentry Center. Then he asked us to take over post-production of the ministry broadcast. We started by creating a show open, close and graphics and editing the broadcast every week. Then next thing you know, we were creating a new site.
From 1999 to early 2005 D&C continued to produce a great deal of the ministry TV production and outreaches for Mt. Zion Nashville, until the ministry was able to transition into doing everything in house. Along the way, we were nominated for Emmys and have won some great awards and recognition. Even now, if you listen to the end of the ministry broadcast, you will hear my voice over work.
Although that era is over, I am honored that I played a significant role in building this tv ministry. Take a look at one of my past demo reels that highlights some of my initial media projects while living in Nashville, Tennesse.
On this tv ministry tips blog, I will tell you some of the trade secrets I have learned throughout my 17 years in the television industry. But more specifically, I will give you a true glimpse at how to start your ministry media broadcast without bursting your budget. I will start by using excerpts from my FREE ebook, THE ABC’s OF BROADCAST TV: How To Begin a Quality TV Broadcast Without Bursting Your Budget
I will also take the time to "show & tell" how we have helped and continue to help churches and ministries with their media efforts. Also, be sure to tune in to my online blogcast channel, Dwann & Company Radio.

If you ever have a question about your ministry media efforts, please email me and I'll answer them and post them here. For now, take a look at some of our recent work from the last year:
Ministry Promo produced for Pastor K. Edwin Bryant of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church, Dayton, Ohio.
Conference commercial produced for Pastor Gregory Ford of First Assembly Cornerstone, Ft. Myers Florida.
